NetBSD is based upon 386BSD (a UNIX architecture) and one of the operating systems that has been around the longest. NetBSD is, just as Linux, open source and has been powered by a community all this time. Charles Hannum, one of the founders of NetBSD, has now offered hos view on the condition NetBSD is in and it is not a pretty picture. Even if NetBSD will still be around for some time it seems like there is a lot that needs to be done for the distribution to be able to keep up with the rest, e.g. DragonFly which has grown very popular lately.
