ReactOS and its reputation has been spreading quite a lot through the years and those of you who’ve managed to evade this operating system until now we quote the website where they present the OS as follows:

The ReactOS® project is dedicated to making Free Software available to everyone by providing a ground-up implementation of a Microsoft Windows® XP compatible operating system. ReactOS aims to achieve complete binary compatibility with both applications and device drivers meant for NT and XP operating systems, by using a similar architecture and providing a complete and equivalent public interface.

In other words an open source Windows. Sounds almost too god to be true?

It all started ten years ago, but has first now been able to really bloom as it now not only offers the kernel and does it well, but also an interface that appeals. The thought is not to create a Windows copy straight off but to create a core you can use with Windows-compatible code and then expand from that. Thus offering the possibility to run Windows code on an operating system you can define completely by yourself, more or less.

The influences from various Linux distributions are many and for that we’re happy because they’ve tried to pick the best of what they could find. At Neosmart they’ve published a review of ReactOS which unfortunately not focuses on the functionality and compatibility, but instead the idea, concept and development of ReactOS. A very interesting article well worth reading as it shows there are alternatives to Windows that are not Linux.
