Intel is, as you know, one of the leading designers of computer circuits, but it also designs cooling solutions. So far the cooling has been a bit short-handed, but now it has changed this. Intel has namely revealed a water cooling kit that not only is very easy to use, highly effective and a commercial solution would only cost about $50 (!). About the same as a big air cooler. Intel’s water cooling prototype was used to push its Pentium Extreme Edition to 5GHz with ease. Intel has apparently spent about 3 year to develop this solution monitoring other commercial solutions to find faults and limitations to avoid or work around these.

”The answer is this: Intel’s Advanced Liquid Cooling prototype. It consists of a block unit which attaches to the processor. This contains the copper core which makes contact with the CPU, as well as a centrifugal pump which uses a DC brushless motor. This pumps the water up through solid metal tubing to a more traditional radiator, cooled by a 120mm fan. The integration of the cold plate improves thermal performance. The main body of the unit is made of injection-moulded plastic. ”

We are really looking forward to hearing more about Intel’s water cooling to see if it is perhaps something out of the ordinary. We are still waiting for the first commercial systems to arrive in stores.
