Dolby is a company best known for its sound technologies, but if you’re working in the cinema industry the leap to video is pretty short. Dolby has now announced that it will present its coming Dolby 3D Digital Cinema during ShoWest 2007. The great thing about it is that it’s not a big and clumsy upgrade of current theaters, but more of a simple add-on making it possible for simple theaters to offer a whole new depth. It’s simply a color filter that will add an extremely realistic 3D depth and can do it using regular digital projectors. When you don’t want to use the filter you simply remove it and can show regular 2D movies.
Dolby is in no way ready to launch 3D Digital Cinema, but is still very optimistic and pleased with how well the technology works at this early stage.

There is no need for extra color correction or other compensation processes in postproduction, as all processing is performed in the server. This innovative approach not only saves time and money, but it simplifies the overall process as the color correction is the same for both 3D and 2D digital cinema presentations.”
