WHDI, or Wireless Home Digital Interface, is a standard for streaming high definition video between devices. The WHDI organization has announced that it will implement the next big update in the fourth quarter, and it brings 3D.

The interface can already stream full HD 1080p but with full support for HDMI 1.4a the new WHDI 3D standard enable streaming of 3D broadcasts.

The press release also reveals some more detailed plans on version 2.0 of the specification, which is slated for Q2 2011.

  • Full 3D support (in addition to all HDMI 1.4a required 3D modes, WHDI will support the next generation 1080p 60Hzx2 3D format)
  • Support for the next generation 2Kx4K HD format with four times the resolution of 1080p (4,096 x 2,160 pixels)
  • WHDI-Wi-Fi integration and same channel co-existence
  • Mobile device integration through reduced power consumption and footprint

WHDI has 70% of the wireless video market, but is expected to grow to 75% up until 2015. The technology operates in the 5GHz frequency band and already supports 1080p/60Hz over distances of 30 meters.
