Western Digital has really been left behind by the competition in the battle for the storage capacity where Seagate has launched its impressive Barracuda 7200.10 at 750GB. This huge capacity comes from the fact that it uses perpendicular magnetic recording. This technology lets the harddrive store considerably more data on a surface than older technologies allowed, WD has not yet adapted this effective storage technology. Now the time has come and it has announced that its mobile 2.5″ harddrives (WD Scorpio) will be launched with perpendicular recording technology under the hood.

It has also announced that its stationary Caviar series has been optimized for higher storage capacty, but it doesn’t say in print that it will also use perpendicular magnetic recording. It seems Western Digital is on the road back, storage-wise, which we only can consider a positive thing.
