Microsoft Origami and Intel’s UMPC concept turned out to be two names for the same platform and the first Ultra Mobile PC units has actually already been launced. It has been pretty obvious that these were first generation UMPCs as the battery times and prices have been heavily debated, units that could be called a crossbreed between a pocket PC and a laptop. At HardOCP they’ve tested an UMPC prototye from VIA, which is famous for its power efficient designs. With a 1GHz VIA C7M processor under the hood and a price at 900 dollar it is not the most affortable UMPC unit on the market. HardOCP seems to like the UMPC concept and the most appearent drawbacks with VIA’s unit are synonymous with the platform itself. Namely poor battery time and a high price.
