Epic ported Unreal Engine 3 for Apple’s iPhone 3GS/iPod Touch platform last year, although a stripped down version, and this was just the start. In an interview with develop-online the game developers VP Mark Rein spoke up on the plans for the mobile segment where NVIDIA’s new Tegra 2 platform is set to dominate, if NVIDIA gets what it wants.

Epic revealed support for the UE3 engine on Tegra 2 earlier on and Rein continues to praise NVIDIA’s new mobile platform.

It is amazingly powerful for a mobile platform and performs well within the power range that you’d want for Unreal Engine 3, so it could be a good fit for our engine. […] If Tegra 2 can do what it does today just think how much power we’d get with Tegra 3 and Tegra 4. Same goes for future generations of iPhone and iPod Touch. If current trends continue then in a few short years we’ll see mobile devices that are easily as powerful as Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on a per-pixel basis and soon even beyond that.

In a few years we might have mobile phones and handhelds with the graphics performance of modern video game consoles … it’s a pretty exciting thought.
