Small preview imageATi has been greeted with open arms by critics for its chipsets for single and dual graphic card in the form of CrossFire. The performance has been very good, while the stability and overclocking potential has been just as good. The Achilles heal has been the chipset though, namely ATi’s southbridge SB450 which has lacked some ordinary features and problems with the USB2.0-controller. The latter is a big problem as ATi’s southbridge offers about half the bandwidth that e.g. nVidia’s nForce 4-chipset does. Unacceptable for such advanced chipsets as Xpress 200 and CrossFire.

Waiting for ATi’s SB600 southbridge circuit manufacturer ULi has stepped up. It has launched a Xpress 200-compatible southbridge which more or less fixes all problems ATi’s with own chipset. This makes it possible for mainboard manufacturer to pair ATi’s Rx480/482 northbridges with ULi’s M1575 southbridge for a complete package of features and performance. Anandtech has tested the new southbridge by ULi and it seems perform very well.
