Smaller harddrives are becoming all the more popular and thanks to solid state drives the 2.5″ formfactor has had a big increase in popularity. For mechanical drives there are some much more obvious storage limitations, but the technology is moving forward and now it is time for  Toshiba to ready 1TB 2.5″ harddrives.

Toshiba MK1059GSM uses three platters to achieve 1TB of total storage, but the company also has a 750GB model that only needs two platters, Toshiba MK7559GSXP.

The physical difference between the two is that MK7559GSXP is only 9.5 millimeter thick, while MK1059GSM is 12.5 millimeter thick.

Toshiba claims the the new harddrives are 14% more energy efficient that previous models when operating at 5,400 RPM over the SATA 3,0 Gbps interface.

The 750GB model is expected to start shipping next month.
