NVIDIA is keeping a high momentum with its mobile processor circuit Tegra. Beside the 3D-capable circuit that it is expected to present this Spring we no hear about the next generation Tegra and the launch is slated for this year already, 2011. Tegra 3 will get up four Cortex-A9 CPU cores, clock frequencies up to 1.5 GHz and three times more powerful GPU.
Tegra 3 and its performance specifications was revealed by the same roadmap that revealed the Tegra 2 3D product, which was published verbatim at Brightsideofnews. The roadmap reveals that Tegra 3 will launch in two varieties, one for tablets called T30 and one for smartphones called AP30.
The major difference is that T30 for tablets use four cores, which thanks to the Cortex A9 architecture and 1.5 GHz clock frequency results in 13,800 MIPS, almost 200% higher performance than the 4,600 MIPS of the current dual-core Tegra 2.
The integrated GPU will also be optimized and be three times faster than current chips. Tegra 3 will support playback of Blu-ray movies and screen resolutions up to 1920×1200 pixels on tablets. Tegra 3 AP30 for smartphones settles for two or four CPU cores and screen resolutions up to 1366×768 pixels, which should go a long way with 4-5″ screens.
Tegra 3 will not only be a lot more powerful, but also be able to enter extra energy efficient power modes, called ULP CPU Mode, to make sure battery times do not suffer too much from the raw power available.
NVIDIA is aiming to have the first Tegra 3 products on the market in the Fall of 2011.
