The SSD market has gained some serious momentum, at least from a technical point of view with both higher storage capacity and better performance. Intel and Micron has taken another step in the development of faster Solid State Drives. It has announced a new kind of NAND flash technology which makes chips up to five times faster than the NAND flash circuits of today. Chips made with this technology sport read rates up to 200MB/s and write rates up to 100MB/s, a perfect fit for SSDs.

”The new technology is already used by Micron which has begun to sample 8Gb chips based on it. Built using the 50nm production process the 8Gb NAND is set to enter mass production in the second half of this year.”

Let’s just hope that SSDs are not just getting faster, but also cheaper because right now they are unattainable for regular human beings.
