Seagate was the first to launch a harddrive with SATA 6Gb/s support but performance wasn’t exactly breathtaking. The SATA interface and its 3Gb/s bandwidth was in no way a bottleneck for mechanical harddrives and now rival WD have cemented this fact.

The new WD Caviar Black WD1002FAEX harddrive is the company’s first SATA 6Gb/s drive and the first reviews show that it is indeed a very competent harddrive, but there is little to gain from the SATA 6Gb/s interface.

WD continues to produce quality harddrive and PC Perspective is very happy with the drive as a whole. It’s just as obvious as WD doing the right thing to holding off on SATA 6Gb/s interface. It shows that it is certainly up to speed, but it won’t be until we see more SSDs that we can really enjoy the benefits of SATA 6Gb/s.
