We have known for long that OCZ Octane would be the first SSD with the new Indilinx Everest controller that was developed and manufactured inside the company. Now Octane is listed at OCZ with complete specifications, where it brags about good performance with compressed data.

OCZ Octane will be the first SSD wuth the inhouse-developed Indilinx Everest controller. The new Everest controller makes use of proprietary algorithms to boost, and bring as even performance as possible no matter file type or size. OCZ says that Octane has ”better” performance when handling compressed data. We can only assume that it is comparing to SandForce and its achilles heal, which is compressed data. OCZ hopes that Octane will be the better option, no matter the kind of data you are working with.

Octane comes in four different versions where all are based on the Indilinx Everest controller and 20nm grade MLC NAND flash memory. As you can see the write speeds are not very high in the lesser units, especially the random 4K speeds. But at the same time it is the reads that mirror most normal use, and it claims that the SSD will get really good performance at QD (queue depth) 1 – 3.

OCZ Octane sports the proprietary NDurance technology for keeping the lifespan of the NAND memories long, and maintaining performance after longtime use, where the TRIM support will also coming to good use. The unit comes with integrated 256-bit AES encryption support. How good OCZ Octane, and the new Indilinx Everest controller really is we can’t say right now. We will be looking into it though.
