Hitachi has presented a new storage technology that will enable up to 3.9 Terabit per squareinch, a storage density almost 8 times higher than current tech. If the technology finds its way onto the market in the 3.5″ format it will be with capacities up to 24TB.
Hitachi that developed the technology together with Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO) uses nano patters to create magnetic structures of only 10nm.
Current mechanical drives can reach up to 0.5 Terabit per squareinch, which is enough to build 3TB harddrives using four platters, but now it seems like the mechanical drives are capable of a lot more than that.
WHen and if this will happen is hard to say since the technology is still in the research stage.
