OCZ is not a company to put all eggs in one basket. It’s primary market is nowadays SSDs and besides working with SandForce and its own Indilinx controllers it is working closely with Marvell on a new series of products – Kilimanjaro.
Kilimanjaro covers three product segments whereof one is designed for Ultrabooks. The most interesting with Kilimanjaro is that the controller circuit is developed together with Marvell, but will only be used in OCZ products.
The first Kilimanjaro product is Z-Drive R5, a PCI Express solution sport eight controller circuits with up to 12TB capacity and 1,800,000 IOPS. This is a business solution with a near astronomic price tag. We also see an Ultrabook certified SSD. The solutions is designed for smallest possible footprint to fit inside the thin computers that are coming soon. In fact, it is already available inside LG XNote.
Last we have one of few toys for Intel Thunderbolt. Lightfoot is an external storage solution that will come in capacities of 128, 256, 512 GB and 1 TB. Using the Thunderbolt interface it will be possible to reach speeds up to 750 MB/s and 100,000 IOPS.
It really looks like OCZ intends to keep a big portfolio for all possible needs and customers. Using SandForce, in-house Indilinx and this venture with Marvell, where it has designed an OCZ-exclusive controller. It is still unclear if Kilimanjaro will be available in any regular SSD units. Kilimanjaro is something we hope to look closer at in the future.
