Cell is something most people here at NordicHardware has heard of, but then again as Sony, IBM and Toshiba has hyped its processor pretty much as you can without actually launching it that is no surprise. Cell is processor developed for handling mulitmedia applications and is best known for being the heart and core of Sony’s gaming console PlayStation 3. One of the biggest advantages, but also one of the biggest drawbacks, is the architecture’s parallel design. Many have discussed an eventual mini-model of the Cell-processor where you simply remove some of the processing units which will result in a powerful CPU that can be used for mobile units. Now Sony has confirmed that it has plans for a ”Micro Cell”-processor which will be used for mobilr units such as cell phones and similar.

”Speaking at the Tokyo International Digital Conference, Kutaragi said that the Cell processor will be reduced in size to lower power consumption and allow for multi-core architectures. Dual Cells and Mini Cells will be developed, and eventually the Micro Cell will be used to power smaller handheld devices.”

It is going to be very interesting to follow Cell’s development and if Sony can keep half of what it promises it looks like Cell can make quite an impression on the electronics market. Among others we will surely see Sony Ericsson phones with Cell processor technology in the future.
