Robson cache technology is the name of a new technology Intel has developed for portable computers and the goal has been to speed up the startup times from being turned off and programs when inside Windows. Robson cache technology doesn’t just do that but also lower power consumption, which also sounds too good to be true. Intel has already displayed the new technology live during IDF in Taipei and during the demonstration the Robson-activated laptop more or less started immeditately, while a laptop without the Robson-technology took several seconds to start.

It also showed how the technology speeds up programs by starting Adobe Acrobat Reader (good choice…) which took 0.4 seconds with the Robson-laptop, whcih you can compare with 5.4 seconds for the other laptop.

Then what is the secret behind the miracle technology with the odd name: NAND-flash memory. Robson cache technology uses NAND-flash memory to start both the computer and programs like a cache memory, thus the name. The flash memory has much lower access times than a mechanical harddrive and it is this that is the secret. The flash memory also requires less power fetching these data which lower power consumption and increase the battery time.

Intel didn’t want to share any details about Robson cache technology but the technology is ready for evaluation by computer builders. Exactly when and to what extent Robson will arrive on the market is up to the computer manufacturers but to us this seems like a great technology even for use with stationary computers.
