One of the big advantages with the R520-architecture, but has also been its achilles heal for some time, is the manufacturing technology at 90nm which makes it possible to push the circuit to very high frequencies. GeForce 7800 GTX is specified at 430MHz while many claims that X1800 XT, top model in the R520 family, will be launched at 600MHz. However new indications points to that 600MHz isn’t enough for X1800 XT. Considering that the card has 8 pipelines less than 7800 GTX, from what we known so far, it is hardly surprising that ATi will try to push the frequencies as high as possible. The question is how high it can go and what it will do for the performance.
