Radeon X1800 XT wasn’t just launched as a very fast 3D-card but also offers new features for 2D-video. Unfortunately we’ve seen very little of AVIVO’s promising features and even if looks good on paper it’s hard to make a statement without seeing it in practic. One of the more interesting features of AVIVO is GPU-accelerated transcoding. Transcoding is when you encode one video format to another, often with other resolution or similar. A very demanding job for any processor and ATi is hoping to relieve the processor in this case.

So far ATi’s transcoding software for the Radeon X1000-family is still in the development stage but at ExtremeTech they’ve had the oppuortunity to test the software a little and compared the performance with AMD’s most powerful dual core processor and ATi Radeon X1800 XT. You can’t find a more efficient processor for video transcoding in a desktop computer so the X1800 XT is facing a worthy opponent. The results posted at ExtremeTech are therefore extremely astonishing. The ATi card did the same transcoding process at least five times as fast as AMD’s X2 processor! ATi is working full time with this software and we can only hope that they manage to deliver a working software very soon because this a revolution in video transcoding.
