AMD will unveil its Radeon HD 4890 graphics card on April 6th and the card that will appear in stores is a slight upgrade from the current flagship, Radeon HD 4870. As many earlier reports have indicated Radeon HD 4890 is very similar to its precursor. Now that first pictures of Radeon HD 4890 have appeared they kind of confirms the rumors. The only thing we know for certain is that the clock frequencies will be higher.

The specifications we posted back in February seem to stand and are as follows;

  ATI Radeon HD4890 ATI Radeon HD4870
Graphics circuit: RV790 RV770
GPU frequency: 850MHz 750MHz
Memory frequency: 975MHz (3900MHz) 900MHz (3600MHz)

The first HD 4890 card that will launch at the start of April is not the new flagship though. Later on in April AMD will launch an Extreme model that will be clocked 950MHz on the core.

With just a slight increase of frequencies Radeon HD 4890 is a way for AMD to marginally improve performance and put pressure on NVIDIA and its GeForce GTX series with minimal effort. The price of Radeon HD 4890 seem to be around 260€ and will most likely give NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 260 and 275 cards a run for the money.
