AMD has opened up for partners and is now allowing them to release custom versions of Radeon HD 5870. ASUS has some of the hardest working engineers and we know have some more information on the new ROG Matrix 5870 2GB graphics card that has been tweaked in every possible way.

As usual ASUS has made its own cooler for the Matrix model where a thicker fan offers 22% higher air pressure at the same speed as the reference model. The heatsink is also a lot bigger, while the number of heatpipes has increased from four to five.

The graphics card also has some of ASUS’ unique functions like a ML capacitor for optimizing the GPU voltage and measuring spots for various voltages. The GPU load is monitored by a microprocessor that then sets the voltage and clock frequency dynamically depending on the load.

With so called high leakage models of the Cypress XT GPU, ROG Matrix comes higher clocked from factory, 900MHz GPU while the graphics memory works at 4800MHz, but there is 2GB GDDR5 RAM of it. There is every possibility to increase both clock frequencies and voltages, adjust timings through software for even higher clock frequencies and it should be a real treat for overclockers.

Price and availability pending.
