We have widescreen TVs and then we have WIDEscreen TVs. As you perhaps remember Philips has decided to develop a new series of LCD TV for the extreme movie enthusiasts as the TV us the wider theater format 21:9 instead of the more common home format 16:9. The reason is simply to get rid of the horizontal black borders most movies suffer from with the 16:9 format. Even if the HDTV standard uses the 16:9 format most new movies are wider than that. Which is also why the theater screens are considerably wider in aspect than our regular TVs.

Philips Cinema 21:9 will be the first TV capable of showing 2.35:1 movies without black borders and with a diagonal measurement of 56″ it’s a rather cool build. There are still few detailed specifications for the TV, but over at Pocket-Lint they have published a video where we get to see more of Philips Cinema TV series.

The amount of people looking to buy this TV is of course quite limited and the price will most likely make it even more exclusive, but always appreciate innovative solutions and companies that are prepared to take things one step further.

Watch the movie over at Pocket-Lint.
