In the absence of its real enthusiast processor series, better known as FX, AMD has launched a couple of Black Editions of its regular Phenom and Athlon 64 X2 processors. The latest is Phenom 9850 Black Edition which, like all Black Editions, has en unlocked multiplier. Phenom 9850BE was launched when AMD decided to unleash its B3 stepping and it does overclock slightly better than the preceding 9600BE, but maybe not as much as most were expecting. Reviewers had a hard time getting to 3.0GHz, fewer managed to get it stable. In the hands of Polish overclocker Milans, Phenom 9850BE reached new heights.

Milans’s water cooling may look a bit ”home-made”, but it sure gets the job done with some ice to assist. The motherboard was a DFI LanParty DK 790FX-M2RS. He had to use a Vcore of 1.48V to reach 3710MHz (17.5×212).
