The new interface for Windows 8 can no longer be refered to as ”Metro”, since it is already a registered brand with the German company Metro AG. Imagination has apparently run out at Microsoft and Metro will not get a new name, but instead simply be called Windows 8.

After Metro AG expressed concerns about Microsoft infringing on its brand, Microsoft hastely told partners to stop refering to the word Metro and instead describe the interface. Microsoft has at the same time said that Metro was just a code-name for the interface, which we find odd since it has been used so loudly over the last year.

Windows_8_MetroDesktop and Windows 8 apps, instead of Desktop and Metro 8 apps?

The company has now found its replacement and took what was closest at hand: Windows 8. ”Metro-Style application” will now be called ”Windows 8 application”, ”Metro user interface” is now ”Windows 8 user interface” and instead of ”Metro design” it will be ”Windows 8 design”. Not the most revolutionary Microsoft has released, but then again a pretty natural development, right?

Uppdatering 2012-08-11 12:55: Metro will not only be replaced by Windows 8 to describe the new interface, but also the word Modern, reports The Verge. For instance ”Metro user interface” will be replaced by ”Modern user interface”.
