Intel announced back in May a whole ”new” category of notebooks, or copy of MacBook Air you decide. It was all about ultrathin computers with profiles less than 21mm, together with an Intel SSD, Intel dual-core processor at 17W and battery times up to 10 hours for less than $1,000. The name was Ultrabook and it has now created a fund that will support developers to get them started with the concept.
Ultrabook is basically an ultrathin notebooks without restrictions on performance and despite the profile it will deliver acceptable performance. In the future Intel hopes that you will always be connected to the web with an Ultrabook, as if you were using a phone. Ultrabook is more or less a reply to tablets with better productivity and performance.

We have earlier talked about companies having a hard time reaching up to Intel’s requirements, with what have seemed like a very exepensive story, but Intel wants to hold prices below $1,000. Intel looks to have a remedy for this, but it has also started a fund that will work three to four years into the future with assets of 300 million dollar to help small and large companies to develop Ultrabooks. The money will simply be used to improve the concept in everything from better battery times to better physical designs.
Ultrabooks will deliver a highly responsive and secure experience in a thin, light and elegant design and at mainstream prices. To help realize that vision, the Intel Capital Ultrabook Fund aims to invest in companies building hardware and software technologies focused on enhancing how people interact with Ultrabooks such as through sensors and touch, achieving all day usage through longer battery life, enabling innovative physical designs and improved storage capacity. The overall goal of the fund, which will be invested over the next 3-4 years, is to create a cycle of innovation and system capabilities for this new and growing category of mobile devices.

Ultrabooks are not far into the future, ASUS UX21 that has been shown the most will be the first to market and is expected to be released in September. It will be a 11.6″ computer with a yet unknown price, while ASUS UX31 that we se have no pictures of will be 13.3″. Acer Aspire 3951 is the second known model that will have a 13.3″ screen and 13 mm thickness. It is expected to cost from around 750€ up to 950€.
