Search engine giant Yahoo! has decided to build a new data center in the outskirts of Buffalo, New York. The reason Yahoo! chose to locate its 17,650 square meter center here is because of the closeness to water. Yahoo! will not be using water for cooling its powerful servers, but one of the largest waterfalls in the world, the Niagara falls, will be used to supply the center with 15 megawatt of power at a much lower cost than regular electricity. Yahoo! expects to save over $100 million over 15 years in electrical bills.

The center will create 125 new jobs and the building will start in August with the opening ceremony slated for May next year.

Speaking of cooling, Yahoo! has announced that it will use an air cooling system that pulls in cold from the outside, a system that will reduce carbon oxide emissions substantially. In Buffalo where the climate is colder than in many other places around the USA, this cooling system can operate for the majority of the year.

The servers inside Yahoo’s data center will mainly use Intel’s Nehalem-EP platform and when the center is completed it will house 250,000 server nodes.
