Siemens reported about a week ago that it had been able to set a new network speed record when transferring data through an fiber-optic cable. Siemens managed to reach a whopping 107 gigabit per second. That’s more than 13GB per second. It did this outside of the lab and over a stretch of a hundred miles (US). Hardly an alternative for the local network at home, but more of an upgrade of the slower backbone the Internet relies on today and of course ISPs (Internet Service Providers) spread worldwide.
