Netgear seems to be one of the companies that is interested in the relatively unknown Ethernet system that uses the powerlines to carry the network signals. Netgear will namely launch network cards next quarter that will be able to handle up to 200Mbps, which is a big step up compared to today’s cards that only offer speeds up to 85Mbps. 200Mbps is the theoretical limit and the real speed is estimated to be about 100Mbps, still a lot higher than today’s solutions. Netgear’s new Ehternet via powerline technology should be a nice alternative for those who doesn’t want to install new Ethernet cables throughout the house and don’t think that WLAN is satisfactory.
