Taiwanesie motherboard maker ASRock has made great progress over the last year and during 2010 it grew to become the third largest motherboard maker according to DigiTimes. ASRock shipped 8 million motherboards on the retail market in 2010 and surpassed both MSI and ECS in the sales.

ASRock focuses on affordable motherboards, but despite the relatively low prices the company has good gross margins between 18-19%. Sales of 2 million motherboards in Q4 is expected to be followed by similar numbers or even a minor 5% increase in Q1 2011.

Micro-Star International (MSI) and Elitegroup Computer System (ECS) in turn shipped 7 million boards each in 2010, while ECS also shipped around 10 million motherboards to OEMs, mainly HP.

ASUS and Gigabyte are still the unthreatened leaders among retail motherboard builders where Asustek shipped no less than 21.6 million retail motherboards in 2010, which makes it the largest all around. This is despite the fact it didn’t reach the goal of 25 million sold motherboards, but still a good year with solid profit.

Gigabyte also improved and shipped 18 million motherboards for retail, but the profit was lower than it expected after battling out a price war with Asustek.
