The One Laptop Per Child organization, founded by Nicholas Negroponte, has appeared a few times in the news here at NH and we’ve earlier explained that the organization’s goal is to supply a laptop to even the poor countries throughout the world. This will be achieved by offering really cheap solutions to developing countries that otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford similar tools. Now Negroponte has released more information about the laptop they are working on, among others it will use Linux and the entire computer will only consume 2W when turned on. They hope to be able to sell the computer during 2007 at $135 to lower the price to $100 in 2008 and in 2010 it will, hopefully, only cost $50.

The design has changed considerably since the last time, the ”crank” used to power the laptop when the battery went out had to go. Instead it will most likely use a pedal to generate power.
