Micron has announced the world’s first 2 Gb DDR3 circuit. Using this new memory chip Micron will be able to create server modules with up to 16 GB capacity, and desktop and laptop memory modules with 4 GB capacity. The chip is made with current 78nm technology and sports a bandwidth of 1333 Mbps. The chip is being tested in the labs at the moment and the products based on these chips are slated for arrival during the first quarter next year. The exact specifications of the final modules will of course vary, but at the moment we shouldn’t expect any record breaking frequencies. We’re very glad to see these new high-density chips and hope that there are more coming, especially DDR3 as we really need to start moving on from DDR2 now.
