The Japanese manufacturer Logitec, not to confuse with the mouse and keyboard manufacturer Logitech, recently announced a new and really slim external DVD burner. Logitec LDR-PMC8U2 uses a slot-in design for keeping the size at a minimum and despite this the unit also supports the 8cm miniDVD discs which are used by video cameras with the new format AVCHD. The format has been developed by Panasonic and Sony to be used by mini-video cameras so that they can store high-res video on the small 8cm discs. The new discs require a special software to be read on a PC and Logitec’s new unit will be the first on the market to support this format.

Whether Logitec will release its new unit outside of Japan remains to be seen, but at the end of December the 17.5mm slim burner will be released in Japan costing about 188 USD.
