Intel recently invested 10 million dollars in a chip manufacturer that is working on a new kind of memory chip called MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems). Nanochip is planning on developing a MEMS chip with extremely high storage capacity where the goal is fitting tens of gigabyte onto a single chip to use in portable units. Would Nanochip be able to get its MEMS chip out on the market, which is where Intel’s money comes in, there could be a new actor on the flash memory market where is still a lot of catching up to do, compared to the mechanical harddrives. If nothig else it will lead us to considerably higher storage capacity for our portable units.

”Consumer applications such as digital photography, music and video are opportunities where MEMS-based ultra-high capacity memory can deliver unique advantages over traditional memory devices.”
