Socket 771 will be Intel’s new server platform, replacing the Xeon processors that today use Socket 603/604. The new socket has both when it comes to name and construction a lot in common with the desktop platform; Socket 775. Both sockets use LGA technology, Land Grid Array, that means that the pins is on the socket instead of the processor. A technology that results in less damaged processors during installaion. Also AMD is expected to use an LGA based socket when it will launch Socket 1207 for its future Opteron processors.
