Small preview imageSanta Rosa is the development name for Intel’s coming Centrino platform for mobile computers and now it seems like this platform will be the first on the PC market to adapt the new EFI system. EFI or more precise, Extensible Firmware Interface, will replace today’s BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) that is used by PC motherboards. EFI has already appeared in computers, Apple’s Intel Macs, and the next step seems to be integrating the technology into its own platforms. Santa Rosa will use AMI’s Aptio firmware and is compatible with EFI 1.10 and the Unified EFI standards.

”UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) is a specification detailing an interface that helps hand off control of the system for the pre-boot environment (i.e.: after the system is powered on, but before the operating system starts) to an operating system, such as Windows or Linux. UEFI provides a “clean” interface between operating systems and platform firmware at boot time, and also supports an architecture-independent mechanism for initializing add-in cards.”

Santa Rosa will sport Intel’s Core processor architecture in the form of the mobile processor Merom. The EFI technology will bring a whole lot of improvements over today’s BIOS system, among other better compatibility between software and hardware.
