Small preview imageIntel’s next ”superchip” on the processor scene seems to have appeared on a screenshot of what seems to be a roadmap from Intel. The new processor is a part of Intel’s Extreme Edition-series and will most likely cost you an arm or two if you feel tempted. Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955 is expected to show up at the start of next year and will not only bring higher frequencies to its two cores, 3.46GHz compared to 3.2GHz that Pentium XE 840 works at, but also use a faster bus at 1066MHz and to top of it off both cores gets 2MB L2-cache each to play with.

Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955 will be based on Intel’s Presler-core and will be made with 65nm-technology which of course is a must if you want to use 4MB L2-cache. The new monster chipset will despite it uses the LGA775-formfactor not work with today’s Socket 775-mainboad but only the coming chipset Intel 975X. We don’t know, or even want to know, what the processor will cost but if the information posted at X-bit Labs is correct we will know sometime early next year.
