Intel has a new processor flagship coming and the first benchmarks with the Intel Core i7 975 Extreme Edition has now surfaced. It’s not just anyone that has managed to get a sample by overclocker profile Fugger and together with Mikeguava he has now published the first benchmarks with Intel’s coming monster processors and the first world record to fall was with 3DMark5.
This was made possible by overclocking to nearly 5.3GHz and pairing with two Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics cards running at stock clocks. The processor has D0 stepping and the help of liquid nitrogen the processor the processor was pushed to 5259MHz, which resulted in a final score of 47,026 points in 3DMark05.
You can compare this to the previous record set with an AMD Phenom II X4 processor overclocked to staggering 6.3GHz with liquid helium. This system was ”only” capable of 45,474 points despite a 1Ghz frequency advantage, which clearly shows the difference in IPC between Intel’s and AMD’s processor architectures.
But then again, AMD’s processor costs around $250 while Core i7 975 processor will most likely cost four times as much when it appears in stores.
The performance is on Intel’s side and the new 3DMark05 record is most likely just a taste of what will come.
