HyperThreading is Intel’s technology for handling more than one thread with the same core. The result might look like dual cores but the technology is hardly that effective. There are applications that gain a lot from HyperThreading, but unfortunately are far from all and some even perform noticeably worse with the technology activated. For server systems it is often very useful with parallel power, which HyperThreading contributes, but now it seems though as Intel’s promise of performance gains with HyperThreading with multithreaded applications doesn’t quite cut the cake. When not even the server platforms gain from HT but actually are crippled by it you might wonder if there is any future for HT.
