Graphics memory, or VRAM, is a subject of constant debate and it’s starting to become quite common for some manufacturers to slap on a couple of extra megabytes and market the cards as a better version, but the question is if the extra memory really adds anything. Previous articles have suggested that this is highly relative and more or less entirely dependent on the game. However, as time have progressed games have become more and more accustomed to large memory buffers. Cards with 512 MB memory are quite common today.



Over at YouGamers they’ve posted an article investigating how much graphics memory you really need. While the pure amount of memory matters, there’s more to it. The graphs are quite clear in that 256 MB is not enough when the resolution goes up and then the memory will become a bottleneck. However, there’s no sense in buying a low-end or mid-range card with a lot of memory. It’s better to spend that extra money on a card with faster memory, or even better; a faster GPU.
