Google did what most were expecting. It presented the coming mobile operating system Chrome OS and started up a pilot program for developers around the first notebook, Googles egen Cr-48 in a rarely seen bland design.

Google Chrome OS will be the first cloud operating system where all applications are started and handled through Google’s own Internet servers. Chrome OS relies more or less completely on the Internet and the cloud where all data and applications are found. There is also an off-line mode for those moments you don’t have Internet access, but Chrome OS requires a mobile broadband to work properly.

The advantages of an operating system that is likned to Google’s cöoud services are that the user will never have to worry about back-ups – it’s all handled by Google – and that the entire operating system and the data used is tied to your Google account. This means that you can access your work area from any Chrome OS computer. Programs can be purchased in Chrome Web Store, which also has free applications.

Google Chrome OS will not be available to the public until Summer next year, but today the search engine giant has started up a Chrome OS pilot program that anyone – over 18 år and living in the USA – can apply for. If accepted you get access to the new operating system and a free notebook in the form of Google Cr-48. To point out that Chrome OS pilot program isn’t a commercial venture it has designed a laptop that looks as boring as possible. A matte black 12.1″ compter with no brandings or cool features. Google has revised the keyboard and installed a large mousepad and an Intel-based processor platform. The idea is to not steal any attention from Acer and Samsung that is expected to launch Chrome OS computers in 2011.
