Globalfoundries has barely started construction outside New York, where the plant Fab 2 will be built, when it now announces that it will soon start planning its third plant, named Fab 3 (let’s hope it stops at 4…). Globalfoundries, owned by AMD and Advanced Technology Investment Company, has gained some real momentum and to reach its goal as the market leader in semiconductor manufacturing it continues with its grand plans.
For obvious reasons there is no concrete information on Fab 3, but the fact that Globalfoundries is already open with and talks about a third manufacturing plant when it has just started build its second one is a pretty clear sign for where it is hoping to go.
Globalfoundries believes in its capabilities and even if it is currently only making chips for AMD it recently announced contracts with AMD’s graphics card section, ATI, and STMicroelectronics.
Since Globalfoundries seems convinced that will require more capacity than possible at only two plants, there are most likely more customers on the way in, where the name NVIDIA has been mentioned.
