Several consumers that invested in NVIDIA’s new flagship GeForce 7900 GTX have reported that they’ve experienced freezes and even lockups. Something that more or less everyone had in commmon was that they had bought 7900 GTX cards that came overclocked from factory and now it seems that it is the overclock that is the cause of the problem. The cards simply couldn’t handle the load at these high frequencies which in turn resulted in these mysterous freezes;

”Basically, a game or benchmark would “freeze” for a time between 10 and 60 seconds, then “unfreeze” and return to normal playing conditions. It was an odd issue that I hadn’t really seen before and we spent time with new drivers, new power supplies and new motherboards to try and fix it.”

At PC Perspective they’ve investigated the problem and through tests of their own concluded that the problems disappear if you downclock the cards to NVIDIA’s original frequencies. In other words it seems that NVIDIA’s partners have been a bit too optimistic with their overclocks as they simply can’t handle the higher tempo. NVIDIA has announced that the card manufacturers will fix the cards that experience these problems as this is without doubt something that is covered by the warranty.

Anyhow, this is truly a wake-up call for those manufacturers who often pressure their cards a little extra to make them stand out.
