Small preview imageGeForce 7800 GTX is the fastest card available today and considering this the fact that 7800 GTX also performs better than its competitors in really high resolutions is no surprise. We’ve seen it in review after review, but there has been little discussion whether the 7800-series might have more advantages than just a better overall performance. At TechReport they have through siscussions with ATI and NVIDIA and own tests reached the conslusion that the 7800-series is considerably better at handling resolutions above 2Megapixel (1920×1080+). The earlier generation high-end cards are simply not optimized for handling resolutions above 2Megapixel.

This applies to both nVidia’s GeForce 6800-series and ATi’s Radeon X850 XT that in several cases drops considerably with resolutions such as 2048×1536 pixlar. Both these circuits have memory bufferts with capacity less than 2Megapixel-resolutions which means that the rendering will bw very inefficient at higher resolutions.

In TechReport’s article they have through a series of tests revealed this, among other how Half-Life 2 works excellent at 2048×1536 px with 7800 GTX while 6800 Ultra and X850 XT are completely off. Very interesting reading that shows that the 7800-series is a lot better prepared for the future.
