Ericsson recently presented a surprisingly good result for the fourth quarter where they reported a profit of 6.4 billion Kronor. This surpassed analyst belief, but it doesn’t change Ericsson’s plans to lay off 5,000 employees in 2009. Just like many other IT and electronics companies Ericsson is reorganizing and aims to lower costs, which includes laying off a portions of the workforce. Around 1,000 of the people that will be let go works in Sweden, the rest are scattered.

Already during 2008 over 4,000 people had to leave the company, so unlike many other companies Ericsson already started reorganizing before the economy started going seriously downhill.

At the same time, the relation between Ericsson and Sony has become all the more tensed, since Ericsson claims that the cooperation with Sony in Sony Ericsson reduced profit by 31 percent through a loss of 187 million euro.
