From budget processors we move directly on to the high-end market where we meet Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron. At ExtremeTech they have made a comparison between two dual systems based on these processors. Intel Xeon 3.06GHz fights against AMD Opteron 248 in this test which includes a number of different server and workstation related benchmarks. Also two game tests are on the list to see if the two dual systems also stand good in this area.
In the server/workstation market Intel has not got the same problem as on the budget market since the Xeon processors deliver very good performance. But it is very clear that the Xeon processors will have to fight to keep up with AMD’s latest Opteron models which comes out victorious in several tests.
Overall it is relativly even but Opteron is the one that feels like the hottest platform (one might add that Intel’s Xeon flagship is actually at 3.2GHz).

“In uniprocessor systems, Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology often gives it an edge over an AMD64-based CPU in some benchmarks. However, once we toss in a second CPU, all bets are off. The dual Opteron system outperformed the Xeon 3.06GHz (and would likely outperform the 3.2GHz version) in benchmarks where Intel had won on single CPU performance.”
