ASUS is said to have plans for a new series of budget laptops. When we say budget we mean in the range of $199 to $549, according to Taipei Times. The cheapest models will thus cost just little more than the OLPC and ASUS intends to increase its computer sales in the low-income markets. It is hoping to launch its new budget laptops using the Intel Classmate PC platform and the five different models is expected to arrive during the second half of 2007. The budget machines will use SSD technology instead of mechanical harddrives and depending on the price tag they will have a storage capacity from 1GB up to 40GB.

ASUS’ budget laptops will use a 7″ display, but further details are yet to revealed. ASUS looks like a competitor to Quanta which is making the OLPC. The starting price of the OLPC seems to be a bit higher than first expected $100; 150 USD, but still very cheap for a computer, no matter the specifications.
