Apple has a perhaps unhealthy view on its own brands, even if Apple is one of the most plagiarized companies on the electronics market there has to be some sense behind the defence of a brand. Apple has earlier been out to get companies with the word ”pod” in their names, now matter what market they’re targetting, but now Apple has moved on and explained that the next target is the term Podcast. According to Wired, Apple’s lawyers has sent a letter to a company called Podcast Ready where they simply explain that they do not appreciate that the company has the word Podcast in its name.

Podcast Ready VP Russel Holliman says that they are thinking about changing the name, but for obvious reasons it is not an optimal solution to change a company’s name because of a word which Apple doesn’t even own.

Most people might find it odd that Apple now is going after companies which help spread the word of iPod for free through terms such as Podcast. A lot of discussions have appeared where they’re thinking of changing the name of Podcast to e.g. ”audiocast” and ”videocast”. At Engadget they’ve been following Apple’s crusade and there are links to other writers’ and companies’ opinions about Apple’s latest actions.
