Small preview imageApple has as you know decided to change platforrm to the x86-architecture next year by equipping its Mac-system with Intel-processors. The reason for this is among others Intel’s gearing towards performance/per watt but also the the pure performance was suppose to be  factor. At Anandtech they dug deeper into Apples G5-system to see how it performs, specially IBM’s PowerPC-processor, compared to its PC-equivalents. In earlier tests Apple’s G5-system revealed huge problems when it came to MySQL and the results was crippling performance. They have now published their second part where they test Apple’s G5-system with Linux.

And believe it or not, in Linux the PowerPC-architecture has equivalent floating point performance with the x86-markets flagship, AMD Opteron. In other words Mac OS X is the source of the MySQL-problem  and the article Anandtech now has published asnwers a few questino on why Apple decided to swtich to Intel, especially considering IBM’s new Power 970MP-processor and its features.
