Android 3.0, code-named Gingerbread, is slated for Q4, and with a new interface the minimum requirements look at bit hairy; 3.5″ display, 512MB RAM and 1 GHz CPU.

Android 3.0 is planned to launch on October 15-16 2010, which sounds almost too good to be true, but we won’t be seeing any phones sporting the new operating system until November/December.

According to Eldar Murtazin at Mobile-review.com Google has put the bar up high for Gingerbread where the new user interface requires a powerful hardware. The graphical user interface (GUI) is said to be similar to the gallery application in Nexus One and will require both a large and high resolution touch screen, and a powerful processor and plenty of RAM.

Android 3.0 will support 1280×720 pixel resolution, mainly for devices with 4″ screens, or bigger, and even if we will most likely see some monster mobile phones with these specifications, we’re pretty certain Google is thinking of the tablet market foremost. Where both ARM and even the x86 platforms look eager to use Android.

Google is expected to divide the Android venture with the launch of Gingerbread. Android 3.0 units will become high-end and less capable phones will have to settle for Android 2.1/2.2.

This may be the end of third-party user interfaces that you can find in most Android units. This may sounds a bit negative, but it will remedy the great fragmentation Android suffers from today. Google simply supplies the GUI and with recruits like WebOS chief designer Matias Duarte it has laid the foundation for this.
